Limit Equilibrium Analysis of the Influence of Matric Suction on Unsaturated Soil Slope Stability

چکیده
In slope engineering, soils are commonly at unsaturated state. The question of how to apply unsaturated soil mechanics theory to the slope stability analysis has become a hot spot in today’s geotechnical engineering research. Based on the experimental research of how shear strength of residual soil varies with water content, reasonable computation modules can be created. By using limit equilibrium analysis, which includes Bishop, Ordinary and Janbu method, the stability of residual soil slope can be calculated under different water content. Extrapolating from soil water characteristic curve obtained from experiments, the influence of matric suction on unsaturated soil slope is obtained. The importance of matric suction is revealed in the slope stability analysis. The result shows that: as matric suction increases, water content decreases, shear strength decreases, and safety factor of soil slope is improved.

Instability of unsaturated soil slopes due to infiltration
It is widely known that rainfall induces a rise of the groundwater level and an decrease in matric suction (negative pore water pressure) that results in slope failure. However, in many situations where shallow failures are concerned, it has been noted that there is not much evidence of a rise in the groundwater level sufficient to trigger the observed slope failures. Instead, the failures have...

This paper introduces a methodology for soil slope stability analysis based on optimization, limit equilibrium principles and method of slices. In this study, the slope stability analysis problem is transformed into a constrained nonlinear optimization problem. To solve that, a Self-Adaptive Genetic Algorithm (GA) is utilized. In this study, the slope stability safety factors are the objective ...
متن کاملSoil and Rock Slope Stability Analysis based on Numerical Manifold Method and Graph Theory
Limit equilibrium method, strength reduction method and Finite Difference Methods are the most prevalently used methods for soil and rock slope stability analysis. However, it can be mention that those have some limitations in practical application. In the Limit equilibrium method, the constitutive model cannot be considered and many assumptions are needed between slices of soil and rock. The s...
متن کاملEstimation of Water Retention Curve for Unsaturated Fine Soils
In order to obtain the soil water retention curve of an unsaturated soil which is defined as the relationship between water content and suction, extensive laboratory tests are essential. These laboratory tests are usually costly and time consuming. Moreover, for most practical problems, it has been found that approximate unsaturated soil properties are adequate for analysis. Thus, empirical pro...
متن کاملSlope Stability Analysis Using A Non-linear Optimization Technique (RESEARCH NOTE)
In this study, a limit equilibrium method has been developed that satisfies all conditions of equilibrium and assumes circular slip surfaces. All force and moment equilibrium equations are employed without using simplification assumptions. A non-linear optimization technique is used to solve the system of equations with the corresponding constraints. The proposed method is capable to determine ...
